How we handle your data.

1. Who we are

Manab OÜ (“Manab,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) is a private limited company registered in Estonia (registry code 17372542), with its registered office at Harju maakond, Tallinn, Põhja-Tallinna linnaosa, Telliskivi tn 60a/5, 10412. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and protect personal information when you use our products, including BitEnglish (web) and Manekko! English (mobile), and our marketing site at manab.ai.

2. Information we collect

We collect the following categories of personal information:

  • Account information — email address and authentication credentials (stored as salted hashes), display name, and language preferences.
  • Learning data — lessons, answers, spaced-repetition schedules, quiz results, and study-session timestamps.
  • Voice recordings (BitEnglish only) — short audio samples you record during shadowing, speaking, or composition exercises, used to generate pronunciation feedback and transcripts. These recordings are stored in your account and may be deleted upon request.
  • Microphone audio (Manekko! English) — audio captured during pronunciation practice is processed on your device using Apple's built-in speech recognition service (SFSpeechRecognizer). Audio may be transmitted to Apple's servers for processing under Apple's Privacy Policy. We do not receive, store, or transmit your audio. We only receive the resulting text transcripts.
  • Device and usage data — IP address, device type, operating system, application version, crash logs, and aggregated usage metrics.

We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact hello@manab.ai and we will delete it.

3. How we use your information

  • To provide, maintain, and improve our products and learning algorithms.
  • To evaluate pronunciation, generate feedback, and produce transcripts of voice input.
  • To schedule review sessions using spaced-repetition (FSRS) algorithms.
  • To detect abuse, prevent fraud, and secure our services.
  • To communicate with you about your account and product updates.

4. Third-party processors

We rely on a small set of carefully chosen sub-processors to deliver our services. Each handles only the minimum data required to perform its function and is contractually bound to protect it.

  • Supabase — authentication and database storage for both products; audio file hosting for BitEnglish. Our primary database is located in Tokyo, Japan (AWS ap-northeast-1).
  • Vercel — web application hosting and edge delivery (BitEnglish, marketing site).
  • Apple — Sign in with Apple authentication, and the SFSpeechRecognizer service used for on-device speech recognition in Manekko! English.
  • Google — Google Sign-In authentication (both products); Gemini API for language model inference (BitEnglish).
  • OpenAI and Anthropic — language model inference for feedback and content generation (BitEnglish).
  • ElevenLabs and AssemblyAI — speech-to-text transcription and voice synthesis (BitEnglish).
  • Qdrant — vector search for vocabulary and knowledge retrieval (BitEnglish).
  • Sentry — crash reporting and error monitoring (mobile). Data is processed in the European Union (Frankfurt, Germany). Email addresses and IP addresses are stripped before submission.

Voice and text content sent to these providers is used solely to fulfill your request. We do not permit these processors to train their models on your content.

5. Data retention and account deletion

We retain account and learning data for as long as your account is active. Voice recordings (BitEnglish) are retained to provide longitudinal pronunciation feedback and may be deleted upon request. When you delete your account, we remove your personal data within 30 days, except where retention is required for legal or security purposes.

You can delete your account and all associated data directly from within each application — in BitEnglish via the account settings page, and in Manekko! English via the Profile screen. You may also request deletion by emailing hello@manab.ai.

6. Your rights

You have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal information, and to object to or restrict certain processing activities. Residents of the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and similar jurisdictions may also lodge a complaint with their local data protection authority. To exercise any of these rights, email hello@manab.ai.

7. Security

We use industry-standard safeguards including TLS for data in transit, encryption at rest for stored audio and account data, scoped service credentials, and access logging. No system is perfectly secure; if you believe your account has been compromised, contact us immediately.

8. International transfers

Our primary database (Supabase) is located in Tokyo, Japan (AWS ap-northeast-1), and our crash reporting (Sentry) is hosted in the European Union (Frankfurt). Other sub-processors operate across the European Union, the United Kingdom, the United States, and other jurisdictions. Where data leaves the EEA, we rely on Standard Contractual Clauses or equivalent safeguards to protect it. By using our products you acknowledge that your personal data may be processed in these jurisdictions.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be signaled by updating the “Last updated” date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, by notifying you in-app or by email.
